1. Barbara Kruger

I find Barbara Krugers style in these two pieces to be eye catching and unique. At first glance each piece apears to be an advertisment. Krugers use of imagrey, bold fonts and simple layout, display features you could come across in a typical advertisment. Though as you fully absorbe the image, the irony of each work becomes clear, causing the audiance to think twice.

  1. Without a doubt I agree, what I like most is that everything we see in the image is that it is relatable to the way we purchase products today. When I look and think about both images they remind me of credit card advertisements. I like how in the second image kruger has used the label as that is what most consumers today look at before the price tag. I like the bold fonts because most consumers never read the fine print on products. So now that it is readable it makes you think about what you are really buying. The simplicity of the layout and use of colour ties everything together and gets the message across to the viewer

  2. I think Krugers background in magazine design definitely reflects in these two pieces through the use of the text and photographs. You are right as to say that you need to fully engage in the image to really understand the under-lying message present in the two images and the connection it has to mercantilism.

  3. looking at the works of Barbara Kruger, i would agree, that at first glances they could be depicted as an artical. her background as head designer at Mademoiselle Magazine and the work she constructed for House and Garden shows a big impact on the form and direction of her artworks. i think that her uses of three contrasting colour's (black/white/red or green) enhances the image and text, gaining interest and involving the viewer. Keeping her images to a point of simplicity, allows the message of these images to be read easily by the viewer.

  4. I think so.Because she grasped the crucial point of the problem which public concern.Attracting them,and She shows us the brief words in advertisment with an artistic way.She is famous for her signature black, white and red poster-style works of art.It is striking.

  5. I am agree with you. Overthrough Barbara Kruger's work, she always can declare in her design work, it can be more easy to attract viewer's attention. I can see, in these two images, Barbara use normally advertisement form and content, but she find another way to express these information, and make it more interesting and artistic. She often use colour which has a poignant contrast, like white, red. And also combine the black and white photography and printing together to form a distinctive personal style.

  6. I totally agree that at first glace, the images seem like advertisements. Yet, they are so much more when you read what it says and then consider what she is trying to portray. The words mean so much in these images and how she has captured the words inside a photograph that has also helped us to fully understand the meaning behind them. They are also phrases that could mean many different things, it all depends on how you look at it and understand them. I believe that she is telling us we should be who we are and not wear things that tell people who we are. We should be able to wear clothes and not be a different person underneath. Nothing will make us beautiful other than our self.

Yeah,I agree with you that Barbara style is very eyes-catching and yet interesting in the way she is trying to convey the message throught the words that she has quoted.Every works that she has been doing is always go with the interesting phrases,like what you have said the bold fonts,the way she designed it would cause the audience to think twice.

  8. The graphic style used by Kruger is one of simplicity and boldness. I think the way the pieces resemble typical ads is a deliberate decision by Kruger. What better way to make a bold statement to consumers about the problems with consumerism then to deliver it in the way people typically take in information. its almost as if she is 'speaking their language' inorder to really get the message across. And on a third level this graphic style such a bold message could be a blastent piss take of those who fall slave to consumerism and are fooled by advertising and trends.
